			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A new report from Yahoo! Research has used Twitter in an attempt to answer <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communication_theory">Lasswell&#8217;s maxim</a>: &#8220;who says what to whom in what channel with what effect&#8221;.</p>
<p>The report, <a href="http://research.yahoo.com/pub/3386">Who Says What to Whom on Twitter | Yahoo! Research</a>, found that 50% of all tweets consumed are generated by just 20,000 elite users.</p>
<p>For the purposes of the study, they classified Twitter users into &#8220;elite&#8221; or &#8220;ordinary&#8221;, breaking elite users into the categories media, celebrities, organisations and bloggers.</p>
<p>One of the more interesting things looked at in the report is the lifespan of content, and what they found with media-related tweets.</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;We find that different categories of users emphasize different types of content, and that different content types exhibit dramatically different characteric lifespans, ranging from less than a day to months.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>In its conclusion, the report found that &#8220;media-originated URLs are disproportiantely represented among short-lived URLs&#8221;.</p>

We also find that different types of content exhibit very different lifespans: media-originated URLs are disproportionately represented among short-lived URLs while those originated by bloggers tend to be overrepresented among long-lived URLs. Finally, we find that the longest-lived URLs are dominated by content such as videos and music, which are continually being rediscovered by Twitter users and appear to persist indefinitely.</p></blockquote>
<p>That can be seen in this figure, generated by unshortening 35,000 URLs that &#8220;lived&#8221; at least 200 days, and mapping them to 21,034 domains.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A third party Twitter developer in New York has discovered the hard way that Twitter may now be playing tough, threatening to aggressively &#8220;take whatever steps are necessary&#8221; to protect their rights.  Lawyers representing Twitter have demanded the developer deactivate his website, transfer the domain to Twitter and cease using the API or any reference to &#8220;Twitter&#8221;.</p>
<p>Yesterday <a href="http://mytwitterbutler.com/">mytwitterbutler.com</a> owner and Twitter third party developer Dean Collins arrived home to find an email from lawyers claiming to represent Twitter,  demanding he cease operating his website and hand over the domain because of his &#8220;violation of <a href="http://apiwiki.twitter.com/Terms-of-Service">Twitter&#8217;s Terms of Service (&#8220;TOS&#8221;)</a> and spam rules, and your infringement of Twitter&#8217;s trademark rights&#8221;.</p>
<p>His website is designed to help users auto-follow people when certain keywords appear in their tweets. Many in the Twitter community frown on auto-following that generates masses of spam, but Collins is vehemently denying misuse, and said he&#8217;s using the Twitter API in accordance with the rules.</p>
<p>&#8220;Basically they were saying we want you to hand over the domain, stop using and selling your software, and never use the API ever again,&#8221; Collins said.<br />
&#8220;I think twitter are forgetting how they got so popular in the first place. There are 3000 applications out there all using the Twitter API, all using the rules they gave us.&#8221;</p>
<p>In their letter of demand, the lawyers have suggested that use of the word &#8220;Twitter&#8221; in Mr Collins&#8217; domain will confuse users into thinking his product is affiliated with Twitter.</p>
<blockquote><p>Twitter is concerned, however, that your use of My Twitter Butler and the related domain may cause confusion in the marketplace by suggesting that you and your site are somehow affiliated with Twitter, or are endorsed, sponsored, or approved by Twitter, which would result in an infringement of Twitter&#8217;s valuable trademark rights.</p>
<p>In light of the above, we must demand that you immediately:</p>
<p>1. deactivate the MyTwitterButler.com website;</p>
<p>2. transfer the MyTwitterButler.com domain to Twitter;</p>
<p>3. comply with Twitter&#8217;s TOS and rules, which includes stopping your aggressive and automatic following and offering techniques and software for others to aggressively or automatically follow; and</p>
<p>4. stop all use of the My Twitter Butler name, the TWITTER mark, or any other name, logo, or domain name that includes TWITTER or any confusingly similar term.</p></blockquote>
<p>Twitter&#8217;s success has been built on the back of thousands of third party developers who have taken the API beyond what its founders could have ever imagined, and some in the Twitter Dev community have questioned if this is the beginning of the end for open development using the Twitter API.</p>
<p>Mr Collins said he attended a Twitter-hosted event for developers six months ago, where about 200 developers listened to Twitter representatives give examples of how the API could be used.<br />
&#8220;Auto-follow was the second example they gave,&#8221; he said.<br />
&#8220;I&#8217;m just using their publicly defined API.&#8221;</p>
<p>Some will argue Mr Collins has been warned, as the case is not without recent precedent.  At the beginning of July,<a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/07/01/twitter-grows-uncomfortable-with-the-use-of-the-word-tweet-in-applications/"> TechCrunch reported that Twitter</a> had been getting touchy about using the word &#8220;Tweet&#8221; in applications.  While it <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/07/01/twitter-to-developers-tweet-your-heart-out-but-dont-twitter-it/">seeemed to be cleared up that &#8220;tweet&#8221; was okay</a>, &#8220;Twitter&#8221; is still supposed to be a no-go for applications.</p>
<p>In a <a href="http://blog.twitter.com/2009/07/may-tweets-be-with-you.html">blog post, Biz Stone</a> later said they encouraged the use of the word Tweet, but:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;If we come across a confusing or damaging project, the recourse to act responsibly to protect both users and our brand is important. Regarding the use of the word Twitter in projects, we are a bit more wary although there are some exceptions here as well.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>A quick search by Collins found dozens of third party Twitter applications that used the word Twitter in their domain or application, and he wondered if he was just one of many to receive letters from Twitter&#8217;s lawyers yesterday.<br />
&#8220;It will either turn out that I&#8217;m just one, or it&#8217;s a big deal and 30 to 40 are being taken down tomorrow.&#8221;</p>
<p>If Twitter succeeds in forcing <a href="http://mytwitterbutler.com">mytwitterbutler.com</a> owner Dean Collins to deactivate his website, transfer the domain to Twitter, and stop using any reference to Twitter, the future of other hugely successfull third party Twitter applications like <a href="http://twittercounter.com">twittercounter</a>, <a href="http://twitterfall.com">twitterfall</a>, <a href="http://twitterfeed.com">twitterfeed</a> and <a href="http://destroytwitter.com">DestroyTwitter</a> could also be in jeopardy.</p>

<p>That (original) post title is utter bollocks and mere linkbait. This list does not in any way rank influence, importance or interest, and it contains far more than 100 journalists.</p>
<p>There have been a few lists of Australian journalists on <a class="zem_slink" title="Twitter" rel="homepage" href="http://twitter.com">Twitter</a> (see <a href="#blurb">end of post</a>), but this one is a little different, and much larger. I have classified as journalist anyone who produces content for online or traditional media and, as you&#8217;ll see, some people who are simply involved in the selling or promoting of news media. So really it&#8217;s more of a list of Australian media people on Twitter It&#8217;s also not a complete list of Australian journalists and people in the news media industry on Twitter because that number has exploded in the last few months. It&#8217;s getting to the point where I would be surprised if there&#8217;s a journalist who DOESN&#8217;T have a Twitter account, and so I&#8217;ve stopped keeping track. I&#8217;ve stopped looking for more. It makes for an ambitious and ridiculously long list, but they are who I see as the news media: all the people involved in distilling and producing content that goes beyond recording observations of the every day. Admittedly there are many very good bloggers who under that description should be included, but the list is big enough as it is. <p>Who else can have an opinion on Clay Shirky’s <a title="Clay Shirking - Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable" href="http://www.shirky.com/weblog/2009/03/newspapers-and-thinking-the-unthinkable/" target="_self"><em>Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable</em></a>? Me, apparently, but maybe I’m coming at it from a different angle. When thinking of a business model destroyed, the first thing that came to mind was recent discussions about the individual as a brand. Specifically <a title="Andy Dickinson" href="http://www.andydickinson.net" target="_self">Andy Dickinson</a>’s contribution to the <a title="Carnival of Journalism" href="http://carnivalofjournalism.com/" target="_self">Carnival of Journalism</a> in December 2008, where he said <a title="2009 is the year of the journalist" href="http://www.andydickinson.net/2008/12/19/2009-is-the-year-of-the-journalist-carnival-of-journalism" target="_self">2009 is the year of the individual journalist</a>. I’m not suggesting I have any answers, but here’s one of those fanciful theories: Maybe the individual as a brand can sustain news beyond “<em>The Unthinkable”</em>.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span id="more-1165"></span></p>
<p>The December 2009 Carnival of Journalism host was <a title="Spot.us SpotUs Spot Us" href="http://spot.us/" target="_self">Spot.us</a> founder <a title="David Cohn" href="http://www.digidave.org/" target="_self">David Cohn</a> and, ever the optimist, the topic of discussion leading into 2009 was <a title="December 2009 Carnival of Journalism: Positive new media predictions for 2009" href="http://www.digidave.org/adventures_in_freelancing/2008/12/december-carnival-of-journalism-positive-predictions-for-next-year.html" target="_self"><em>Positive new media predictions for the year 2009</em></a>. It was in this context, looking for the good in the approaching storm, that Dickinson predicted the rise of the individually branded journalist.</p>
<p>This post began as a comment on <a title="Ben Wilks SEO SERPS" href="http://www.benwilks.com/blog/2-quotes-a-link-and-a-thanks.html" target="_self">Ben Wilks’ blog</a>, and is here expanded.<span> </span></p>
<p>As “fixes” for the news industry go none have been found, and <a title="Clay Shirky" href="http://shirky.com" target="_blank">Clay Shirky</a> suggests none will be found.&nbsp; I&#8217;m in agreement with some of what Shirky says, that there is no single solution that will be able to be successfully applied to every newspaper or traditional media operation.</p>
<p>As someone who occasionally muses about the future of journalism, I no longer try to think of a panacea for the news industry, but rather about new approaches that might help the individual survive, whether they be content maker, distributor, or distiller. That leads to the question of what now defines a “journalist”, but I won’t go there now.</p>
<p>When applying to myself that consideration about what is best for the individual I don&#8217;t see it as selfish at all. If I can discover something that will financially sustain me as an individual journalist and, by extension, my family, it may also prove useful to others. Through my “brand” &#8211; be that this website, my other social networking homes, or my employer &#8211; I can distribute that information to others, and from there my success or failure can be adopted in full, copied, edited or mashed up to create a new, better solution.</p>
<p>As much as I<span> </span>dislike engaging in marketing-speak, I think it entirely plausible that the individual as a &#8220;brand&#8221; can be self-sustaining in niche reporting. Not only that, the individual can more quickly adapt as and when required to new technologies or techniques. If innovation is a faster process at the individual level, a higher volume and speed of experimentation allows ineffectual ideas to be sooner discarded and, for the optimist, a good chance of sooner solving their corner of the puzzle.</p>

<p>Finally, if the individual creates something sustainable perhaps its form will successfully translate to larger groups. Maybe, just maybe, the sustainability discovered by and for just one person can eventually return full circle to a business model that can work for mainstream media.</p>
<p>If you haven’t read it, Shirky’s <a title="Clay Shirky, Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable" href="http://www.shirky.com/weblog/2009/03/newspapers-and-thinking-the-unthinkable/" target="_self"><em>Newspapers and Thinking the Unthinkable</em></a> (which, for a differing view, has been well critiqued by <a title="Adrian Monck: Clay Shirky, wrong about newspapers" href="http://adrianmonck.com/2009/03/clay-shirky-wrong-newspapers/" target="_self">Adrian Monck</a>) suggests the current situation newspapers are facing is similar to that of the introduction of the printing press around 1400. There was literary history before the printing press, where books were unknown, and literary history after the introduction of the printing press, where the old, impractical forms of reading were left behind.<span> </span>Shirky suggests the history people forget is that of transition, a time of wild experimentation and epic failure, where nobody could possibly know what a successful product was supposed to look like.</p>
<p>It is that history of revolutionary transition Shirky suggests newspaper journalism should consider itself to now be in. The “unthinkable” is that prospect that nobody wants to talk about, a business model that has so irrevocably changed that there is no going back to what was there before.</p>

That doesn’t mean all 3,000 read the tweet, went to the link or were even online at the time&#8221;, but the potential is there. </p>
<p>The power of retweeting has been seen by almost everyone on <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.twitter.com/" title="Twitter" rel="homepage">Twitter</a>, but an example of mine was with the story about police seizing a member of the public&#8217;s mobile phone and deleting content. I first Tweeted the link at 5.45pm on December 26 (Boxing Day, a public holiday).<br />
From my calculations in less than three hours nine people including me distributed that story to a network of 7600 people. Of course they didn&#8217;t all see the link, or click on it if they did see it, but as Gina Chen said, it shows the potential for news distribution via social networking.</p>
<p>Admittedly I also gained an advantage by being part of mainstream media, but earlier tweets propagating the original story from Ben Grubb were also distributed as widely, or wider, than my later tweets.</p></div>

I would always prefer that were not the case and, as I&#8217;ve said before, I hope to remedy that with more frequent posting.  For some reason my daily <a href="http://delicious.com/earleyedition">Delicious</a> links haven&#8217;t been posting, but <a href="http://twitter.com/earleyedition">my Twitter updates</a> in the sidebar have been flying along at an increasing pace.</p>

Since then it has taken off.  At first I followed the people I thought most influential in new media, but my Twitter use increased as I discovered more people in the ICT field in general, particularly in Australia and Brisbane. Twitter uptake in the Brisbane region has grown quite a bit recently &#8211; <a href="http://twitter.com/tw/search/users?q=brisbane">1400+ who have entered Brisbane as their location</a> &#8211; although actual Twitter use is, for the most part, infrequent.  By grown, I have only my memory to compare that number against the last time I searched &#8216;Brisbane&#8217; in Twitter.</p>
<p>So while blog posts and updates have been slow here on the webpage, I have not disappeared off the face of the earth, perhaps just into the murk of the Twitterverse.  It&#8217;s not a bad place to be though &#8211; very good for keeping up, in real time, with the happenings of your industry (if you follow the updates of people and topics you are interested in).</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t use Twitter to communicate with family and friends, because most of them have never heard of it and, even of those that have, none of them use it.</p>
<p>As a journalist, Twitter has helped me not just in finding a few stories from people I follow, but has also started to help me find stories on certain topics using searches.  I&#8217;ll go into that a little more in a later post.</p>
<p>In the meantime, I do have a few other blog posts in the works, and I hope they&#8217;ll spruce up this drab page in the very near future.</p>

As of this writing I haven&#8217;t been to the one that happened since I became active on Twitter, but there is one happening this weekend.</p>

<p>I am assuming the unused Twitter accounts above belong to these publications, but it&#8217;s entirely possible someone could simply be &#8216;squatting&#8217; on the Twitter user names.<br />
<img class="right frame" src='http://earleyedition.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/twitter1.jpg' alt='Twitter logo' />I set up Twitter accounts for all of The Courier Mail&#8217;s news sections in early October last year, making our newspaper one of the only two news outlets in Australia using Twitter (that I have found), and definitely one of the largest media contributors to Twitter by number of content categories, but not necessarily volume of content.  </p>
<p>The Courier Mail&#8217;s current crop of 20 Twitter user accounts are providing free SMS/IM updates on topics ranging from sports, to business, to breaking news, all with <a href="http://tinyurl.com">tinyurl</a> links to the original story content. I&#8217;m now trying to find time to play around with a Facebook page for The Courier Mail, although I rarely have any spare hours at home to spend doing that.</p>
<p>During the process of setting up these Twitter accounts, I did a search to see if other Australian news outlets were already using Twitter.</p>
<p>Of <a href="http://news.com.au">News Limited</a> mastheads, apart from The Courier Mail, none of the other existing News Ltd Twitter users have posted.<br />
Of Fairfax mastheads, only The Age has a single feed, last updated in May 2007.<br />
The <a href="http://abc.net.au/news">ABC</a> has two feeds &#8211; one of which I follow to receive local news alerts on my mobile phone.</p>
<p>A <a href="http://twitter.com/search/users?q=news">search for &#8220;news&#8221;</a> in Twitter yields a large number of results. Here are just a few (listed as their Twitter user name) that may be of interest &#8211;  <a href="http://twitter.com/financialtimes">financialtimes</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/nprnews">npr news</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/cbcnews">cbcnews</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/wired">wired</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/ITN_NEWS">ITN_NEWS</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/BBC">BBC</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/SkyNewsBusiness">SkyNewsBusiness</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/indianews">indianews</a>, <a href="http://twitter.com/SkyNews">SkyNews</a>, and <a href="http://twitter.com/CNETNews">CNETNews</a>.</p>
<p>In the UK, the BBC and Sky have a larger selection of Twitter updates that can be followed.</p>

<p>The 2007 federal election was approaching when I was working on the Courier Mail Twitter accounts so, having already written a story about politics and social networking, I had a look at what political parties had on Twitter.  </p>

<p>From Doug Naikin, director of the CIA&#8217;s Open Source Center (OSC), formerly the Foreign Broadcast Information Service which was tasked to collect and analyse public information, comes the following.</p>
<blockquote><p>What we&#8217;re seeing [in] actuality is a decline, a relatively rapid decline, in the impact of the printed press &#8211; traditional media.<br />
A lot more is digital, and a lot more is online. It&#8217;s also a lot more social. Interaction is a much bigger part of media and news than it used to be.</p></blockquote>
<p>So watch out.  The CIA is trawling your Facebook, Myspace, YouTube and any other social networking media you can think of.  Just don&#8217;t say the &#8216;B&#8217; word.</p>
