Description of SMO at Wikipedia, linked to at start of article:
"(SMO) is a set of methods for generating publicity through social media, online communities and community websites. Methods of SMO include adding RSS feeds, adding a "Digg This" button, blogging and incorporating third party community functionalities like Flickr photo slides and galleries or YouTube videos. Social media optimization is a form of search engine marketing.

Social media optimization is in many ways connected as a technique to viral marketing where word of mouth is created not through friends or family but through the use of networking in social bookmarking, video and photo sharing websites."

Hi Nica,

No, I don't think SMO will replace SEO, for the exact reason you stated.
People will still search for content, and so the SEO part of the equation will remain important, but where will the majority of the actual hits come from?

I suspect it will be SMO, and I think we'll see less people actually searching for content.

Although the drop in searches won't be dramatic, if one person searches and then shares the result with 5, 10, 50 or 100 other people - that is the number of people who probably won't use a search engine to find the same content. Someone has already done the searching for them, found useful content, and shared it.

But again as you said, the initial search is still important, which means SEO likely won't be dropped in favour of SMO, you'll simply see them complementing each other.
