World Cup – Day 6

Spain (#5) v Ukraine (#45)
Tunisia (#21) v Saudi Arabia (#34)
Germany (#19) v Poland (#29)

Ukraine’s first visit to the World Cup, but only an independent nation in 1991. I was somewhat surprised to hear this is Tunisia’s third consecutive World Cup appearance.

In the Spanish side Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia, two of Liverpool’s best players. Xabi Alonso puts Spain ahead after only 13 minutes. I really thought Ukraine were going to challenge against Spain, but five minutes later they put their second in off a free kick.

It’s half-time now in that game, midnight here, and I’m off to bed to get up at 5am for the Germany-Poland game. I think I can rightfully skip Tunisia v Saudi Arabia.

UPDATE: Poland are playing out of their skins to hold Germany scoreless, and will have to work even harder after having a man sent off with only 15 minutes left in the match. If they can keep it 0-0 Group A will be wide open for Ecuador to take a spot in the second round. Unluckily for Poland, Germany scored the winner in injury time with only 30 seconds left in the match. Poland is out of the World Cup after their two losses.

In Group H Saudi Arabia and Tunisia drew 2-2, while Spain finished 4-0 against Ukraine, who were also reduced to 10 men. Despite a 4-0 thrashing, I still say Ukraine will get up against Tunisia and Saudi Arabia, going through as the second team in Group H.

  1. I am sorry too that the Ivory Coast fell off the tournament. I would have liked to see an underdog win the tournament. And no, I am not from Holland (but of Dutch origin), I am from Israel.

  2. Dave says:

Are you from Holland? I did not know, so the answer is, “No, I was not talking to you.”

I was upset that Ivory Coast weren’t going into the second round, despite the fact they would have beaten half the teams in this competition, Brazil included.

    Are you talking to me?

  4. Dave says:

    Tuesday morning it is.

I have a 1pm game Saturday. I’m sure everyone there will feel like Ronaldinho with all the soccer they’ve watched…. or maybe it will just be me. In any case, it’s quality football on the toob. The Netherlands SUCK by the way – in a it-really-annoys-me-that-they-won kind of way.

And Dave goes crazy on the soccer. I’lll text you Tuesday morning mate ;)
